MY PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

In my opinion teaching is not merely a knowledge giving Process. In the traditional way teaching gives only the subject knowledge to the students. Beyond that the students do not get any extra knowledge of the concerned subject. A Teacher should know about the current status of our society and changes that happen in the world, especially in the concerned subject.

A good teacher has a powerful faith in the future. Like the gardener planting a Teak seedling knowing he or she will never see the tree in all its glory, I know I may never see the fruits of my labours as teacher. My calling is to plant and nurture the seeds that will grow and shape tomorrow. A good teacher knows and understands students, how they develop and learn. Students actively construct and transform their own knowledge based on past experiences and prior learning. All students do not learn in the same way or at the same rate. It is my responsibility as a teacher to be an effective diagnostician of students’ interests, abilities, and prior knowledge. A good teacher must also understand the effects of motivation and peer interactions on learning. To achieve high levels the teacher must avoid sorting students in to different groups and setting them to compete with each other.

Memorization is not always learning because learning requires thinking. The teacher’s greatest gift to the learner is helping the learner be motivated to think, and then to want to learn more. I believe in the power of questions and questioning strategies to cause thinking.

A good teacher must know her subjects and how to help students learn these subjects. A teacher must have a deep appreciation of how knowledge is created in the discipline, how is it organized and how is it linked to other disciplines. Use knowledge of the discipline to expose my students to modes of critical thinking, encouraging them to analyze, apply, synthesize, and evaluate all they read and hear. Love the subject, teach, and know how to make them come alive for students.

A good teacher cannot begin or continue to inspire learning without being a learner. A teacher must constantly learn what is new in the discipline. A teacher often helps to create new knowledge.

A teacher is the most powerful of the role models. Ever aware of the awesome obligation I have to “walk my talk” with my students. If I ask them to live their values and beliefs, I must do the same. Try to treat all people with dignity and respect, and expect students to do the same.

A teacher lives to serve. A teacher is dedicated to learning, to his or her discipline, to his or her students, and to making the future the best possible place for all of us to live.

I believe that teaching should be aimed at the holistic development of a student, rather than just imparting subject knowledge. Rather than making the students memorize facts, a teacher should provide a broad framework to acquire knowledge. It is wrong to force theories on the students. A thirst for knowledge has to be evoked in the students. A classroom should be a platform for interaction. Students should be encouraged to ask questions and teacher should guide them towards the answer. Then only real education takes place. Learning should not be for the sake of learning, but for knowledge. A society advances not by the money they make, but by the knowledge they generate.

A class room is invariably a cross section of the society we live in. This reflects in the various class room attributes like attention span, comprehension ability, logical thinking etc. Any teaching attempt should be planned by keeping both the fast and slow learners in mind, keeping the teaching objectives in mind.Learning being a continuous process, a student should be kept aware about the relevance of what they are studying. Along with this, they should remember what they had learned in the past is linked to this and what in the future lessons will be linked to this.

In today’s world, EQ is as important as IQ. Traditionally, the curriculum concentrates on IQ. A student spends 5 hours of his time every day in a school. The school can provide the right atmosphere and the teacher can give the necessary inputs to the students so that they acquire confidence and develop a positive attitude towards life.

A teacher cannot run away from the problems of a student. Recently, I read about the support rendered by a whole school in Thiruvananthapuram to a 4^th standard student suffering from cancer by collecting money for his treatment and praying for him every day at the school assembly.What better way to communicate the objectives of education.

Education is a process of developing the inner abilities and powers of an individual. In my opinion it must aim at the complete development of the human personality. The aim of education is to train men and women according to their abilities. Also from that he can earn a livelihood. Education must enable the individuals in their moral, physical, intellectual and aesthetic development.

Most of man’s life is spent in a social environment, and in order to accommodate to this environment, the individual requires many social qualities.

Education tries to develop these social qualities to facilitate the child’s social adjustment.

Man is a complex being, made up of many physiological parts, sense organs, nervous system etc. Education must seek to develop every aspect of the individual.

When human beings are to be distinguished from other living beings, they are to be cultured. Cultural development is also an important aspect of education.

Education system must be capable of understanding the individual differences, and to help the pupil whenever necessary. As time passes relevant teaching methods according to the requirements of the time must be adopted.

This is a period of information technology; the modern technologies must be implemented in the schools. Therefore ICT enabled education system is a necessity.
