MY PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING Divya N. Nair

MY PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

Divya N. Nair(Mathematics)

Education is the conscious and deliberate acts by which the matured personality, the teacher, acts upon the immature personality, the student, thereby bringing forth desirable behavioral changes in the latter. According to Tagore, education is “Making life in harmony with existence.” In Gandhiji’s opinion, “An all round drawing out the best in man and child body, mind and spirit” In Plato’s view, “Education develops in the body and in the soul all the beauty and all the perfection which he is capable of.”

Philosophy is an amalgamation of various specialized fields of knowledge, in the pursuit of more and more about less and less. It is the search for a comprehensive view of nature an attempt at a universal explanation of nature of things. Etymologically the word philosophy means love of wisdom derived from two Greek words ‘philos’ meaning love and ‘Sophia’ means wisdom. Philosophy is that branch of knowledge which has for its subject the quest for truth.

There is no aspect of education, aims, curriculum, methods, discipline etc, which is not influenced and determined by philosophy. It sets values on the basis of which education is framed. The philosophy varies from time to time. Philosophies of education reflect not only the accepted ideals and beliefs of a society at a particular time but also those principles which have a bearing on the practice of education.

In my opinion our educational system should be responsive to the changing and challenging needs of times. In a progressive society only promising situation exists. Education must be child centered. The teaching must give importance to the personality of child.

As a teacher, I prefer pragmatism. I promote a teaching method that suggest problem to my pupils and to find for themselves solutions which will work. I give much freedom to my students in sharing their ideas, doubts, thoughts. I allow the children to do experiments or to have a particular experience and thus pass on to the next as it arises from the previous one.
